Two days before “independence” 20 were killed and 60 injured in a bomb blast that shattered a bus load in Dambulla. One day before “independence” a suicide bomber rocks the Colombo Fort Railway Station killing 10 and injuring over 90 people. This “independence” could be called a Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Or, it could be simply celebrations after 60 years of Independence. From a different perspective it could also be the “history of a miserable journey” after independence, 60 years ago. In any person’s life, 60 years mark the age of retirement. But not for a country. There is no retirement for a human society. Nevertheless, 60 years is a long period of independence that needs to be looked back upon. What type of a baggage load are we carrying after 60 years of our own rule?
