Azadek’s Chamber

Victory bollywood style but coming colours no good

What was Sri Lanka doing the whole of last week? At least, what was the South doing? Not very many. But there was enough to keep the days going, like the protests that targeted the IGP for not arresting Dr. Mervyn as ordered by the Colombo Additional Magistrate. It wasn’t the Dr. Minister had gone underground or had got himself warded in the Merchant’s Ward. It was probably the Dr. Minister did not know he was ordered to be arrested. He probably came to know about the arrest when the media organisations came on the Colombo streets asking for the IGP to “go home” if he cannot arrest “Morviya”. It took the law abiding Minister less than an hour to present himself in Courts and have himself bailed out. The efficiency of the whole process was damn too quick for Sri Lanka.

But it wasn’t that easy for Journalist Tissainayagam, who was indicted on Wednesday and remanded after almost 165 days in TID custody. He was in fact held responsible by the TID for the murder of a lone police constable the previous night, who was sent unarmed to guard a printing press that had also been sealed by the TID. This printing press had till that fateful night been guarded by two police constables with weapons in hand. Journalists do arm and disarm people in their reporting, but with Tissainayagam, it had been far more spectacular. With no elaborations as to how Tissainayagam and his group (?) could be responsible, one could assume that Tissainayagam sent one police constable from the Kotahena police station on duty instead of two as usual and sent him unarmed too.

These are peculiar arguments according to legal sources. Its much more peculiar when the Magistrate says the best he could do for the five remand prisoners, who had to be handed over to the police for custody, is to allow them to appeal against their hand over to the police in a higher Court. It was history in Sri Lanka to hand back to police custody, anyone who had been duly remanded by a Magistrate. This was on the orders of the Defence Minister, who is also the President. The five, unfortunately happened to be Tamil and the reason for such historic transfer.

The war in the two provinces heightened meanwhile, sending the second India – SL ODI into the shades of Rangiri-Dambulu hinterland. But then, India managed to win the ODI leaving no reason for the South to take any interest in the match, except that the Russian female cheerleaders were taken off the ground to save our culture. South was unaware though, that in defeat, some of the Sri Lankan cricketing stars were turned into real Bollywood stars by playing for the 10 million dollar movie “Victory” shot on location in most cricketing countries to include top international cricketers. Ajithpal Mangal took to the grounds at the P. Sara Stadium in Wanathamulla to direct Murali, Sanga, Sanath and Dilhara with Bollywood stars Harman Baweja and Amrit Rao and expects his film to be a better hit than even “Lagaan”.

The provincial elections differ very much. There weren’t any stars other than Ramanayake turned prospective Chief Minister. Most governing politicians who turned up in the two provinces were playing the villain’s role instead of the hero’s. The Police were often accused for not playing at least a “no nonsense” role they have to play when the cameras role for teledramas. The governing UPFA has to win for the South to win the war against the LTTE. And they did win convincingly. All the electorates in the two provinces went to the government party leaving the JVP with the worst defeat ever they did not even dream of. Wickramasignhe would have to formulate a theory for his own survival now and the week proved its worth a sacrifice in many a meal that goes with ever increasing prices.

It’s no cheap price for peace. Sacrifices are many. The teachers sacrificed too but have not been put right over their salary anomalies for over 12 years. Last year they refused to mark A/L answer scripts till their grievance was solved and then went to marking centres under police escort with a promise to have the anomalies removed. This year the teachers had a better answer for their security without police escort, for they did not apply to mark A/L papers. By Thursday the media said there’s trouble in some marking centres and two had been closed down. So this year too the students would have to sacrifice their future in some way, if luck does not play cupid.

It wouldn’t be difficult to solve these issues any way now with the President taking over powers to extend the service of all public officers after their stipulated date of retirement. It’s only that the President should extend that power he already used to postpone the retirement of his long time associate “Bulla” as the AG, to the rest of the public servants. All those who refuse to mark answer scripts could then be sent on retirement and vacancies found for the unemployed. Students could then find their cupid in this lovable Mahinda while the people would have to find alternatives to live their life after this week, as Azadek says “ena pota honda nehe goiyo”.

A FREDRICA JANZ SPECIAL

The Real Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna - by Fredrica Janz
Saturday, October 04, 2008 (542 reads)

Watching the recent performance of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna there is but one overwhelming factor that emerges. And that is the JVP's finesse, to lie.

Spurred by an un-quenching thirst for power and the undeniable fact that it can never independently assume the trappings of complete power, the JVP has but only one end result to its deadly game of cat and mouse. And that is to win.

Gold diggers and murderers forsooth, the JVP is easily the most corrupt, hypocritical party that has walked the corridors of Sri Lanka’s parliament. Split by envy and hatred even against each other, the party is governed by humans that can be described in one word – evil.
